A Harper Adams University MEng Agricultural Engineering student, who received a scholarship from CLAAS, reflects on his placement year spent with the company ahead of the launch of the scholarship for 2019.
Lewis Hamilton, 22, from Armagh, Northern Ireland, applied for the scholarship offered by CLAAS in October 2016. As the successful candidate, Lewis received scholarship funding as well as his placement year with CLAAS, which included spending most of the year at the company’s headquarters in Harsewinkel, Germany along with one month working in Spain.
Lewis said: “During my time on placement, I was exposed to the front line of development at CLAAS. This was an eye-opening and rewarding experience for me as a young engineer. I learnt a great deal and the opportunity to work alongside others in this industry provided me with an invaluable insight into a global agricultural business.”
Lewis had the opportunity to work in a variety of positions, allowing him to gain a wealth of experience in different areas of the business. CLAAS also provided training including a course in CAD design. Lewis added: “Having the opportunity to live in Germany and work for CLAAS has been a real privilege.”
A highlight for Lewis was being able to attend Agritechnica, the world’s largest machinery show, in Hanover, which is something he had wanted to do for many years.
